"A portrait of my children once a week, every week in 2013"

Ruby:: My Carrot Top

Jenson::  I am in awe of his drawings.  Auntie Ness sat with the kids for a few hours one day when they had been sick and they drew.  Since he was about 18 months he has loved to draw.  He would sit and draw tiny spiral after tine spiral.  Now he takes his time to look at something and draw it.  On Friday morning he collected some paper and a pen, sat at the kitchen bench, and stated he wanted to draw.  He would not have his breakfast until he had finished.
Top L to R: A redback spider, a mouse, a bee and a flower
Bottom L to R: A pig, a bird with a leg that is about to fall off and a sheep.
I love it!

Mila:: Took to threading like a duck to water.

When I picked Vanessa up from the airport nearly three weeks ago (the time is going much too fast!), I asked her if there was anything she wanted to do while she was here.

She came with a fairly open agenda, but one thing she did want to do is sit beside the fire, with her sister and some mulled wine.

The weather has been fairly crap since she arrived.  Up until a few weeks ago we have really been having the perfect Winter weather.  Frosty mornings, but clear, crisp days.  Some days it had even been nice enough to throw the doors open and let the fresh breeze in.

But since then, the rain has been coming in epic, ground soaking proportions, it's been cold and miserable, and the wind, well, it's been driving some people batty.  So last Sunday saw the perfect conditions to have that mulled wine beside the fire.

After a morning of mulch moving (Vanessa), baking (me), and bed constructing (Johnny), we set to mulling some wine.

Sending the kids off to the bath, we were able to sit for a while, amongst the baskets and clothes horses of laundry, and chat, and quaff, and watch the fire.

It is something that would definitely love to do again.

We had a look at quite a number of recipes.  This one seemed the simplest, with ingredients we had to hand.  It was a very warming tipple, but I must say, was better the next day when it had mellowed some.

750mls red wine
- 5 cloves
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1/4 cup caster sugar
- 2 teaspoons nutmeg
- Peel of 1/2 orange
- Peel of 1 lemon

- In a large saucepan, place the sugar, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon and orange peel.
- Pour in just enough red wine to cover the base of the saucepan.
- Simmer until the sugar has completely dissolved and then bring to the boil. Keep boiling until the liquid turns into a thick syrup. This takes about 4-5 minutes.
- Turn down heat and add the remaining wine.
- Gently increase the heat and warm the wine for about five minutes.
- Strain the wine and serve warm!

"A portrait of my children once a week, every week in 2013"

Ruby::  A mix of surprise, pleasure and scariness at the sudden gobble of a turkey.
Jenson::  Ruby showed him how to do a mean face, and told him to make the face at me when they were both sent to their rooms for not listening.  I don't think his mean face is going to work, it's just too cute!
Mila::  The curiosity of a toddler.

As always, joining the beautiful Jodi.

"A portrait of my children once a week, every week in 2013"

Ruby::  Playing dress-ups with Aunty's clothes.  I asked her to look at me and she pulled this look right off the bat.
Jenson::  Dirt + Dinosaurs = a happy boy
Mila::  Daddy was taking a bit of a snooze after work and dinner.  Mila took the opportunity for a tender cuddle.

Playing 52 with the ever inspiring Jodi, who is talking about slowing down tonight.  I need to take head Jodi!  Thank you for your reminders and inspiration.

"A portrait of my children once a week, every week in 2013"

Ruby::  Waiting at the airport gets boring pretty quickly.  Lucky for Ruby she can make anything a jungle gym.
Jenson:: Everyday he becomes more and more a REAL boy.
Mila::  The transition out of nappies has been fairly smooth sailing.  Letting her tell us when she was ready made a huge difference.

These kind of images really make my heart swell.
